In recent years, the history of social sciences in Chinese over the course of the last century, as well as ongoing debates about the indigenization of social sciences, or even a China-centered paradigm, have become topics of renewed interest. This seminar proposes to examine some of the questions related to the history of social science and humanities disciplines in Chinese, including sociology, anthropology, linguistics, history, economics, etc. Topics of discussion will include the circulation of concepts and scholars, the role of institutions (foreign funded and missionary universities), the contrast between humanities and social sciences disciplines (the former understood as more endogenous, the latter as more external), the role of different historical contexts (Republican China, PRC under Mao and post-Mao, Taiwan, Hong Kong), and the role of ideological systems like Marxism or modernization theory.
