The course will present the main concepts involved in cultural evolution: ultimate and proximate explanations, adaptive plasticity, cultural transmission and cultural evolution. We will use these distinctions to better understand social phenomena such as religion, art or cross-cultural differences.

Prerequisites:
SOCSCI101 is recommended. If you haven’t taken this course, you may read Boyer’s Minds Makes Society (2018).

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • distinguish between proximate and ultimate explanations
