The course explores what human beings know about the sound patterns of their languages, how they learn it, and how this knowledge is represented in their minds. We begin with an overview of the major characteristics of sound patterns, and introduce core phonological concepts (phoneme, feature, alternation). We will then look at research that has sought to determine what phonological generalizations speakers extract from the learning data, and at the implications of these findings for achieving a descriptively adequate grammatical framework: basic rule notation, features, and constraint interaction. Next, we will consider a range of methods that are used to determine speakers’ implicit phonological knowledge, computational models of phonological acquisition, and the role of auditory perception in shaping phonological grammars. Students will also learn core concepts in articulatory and acoustic phonetics, and learn basic tools to analyze the speech signal into abstract units of representation.

Le cours explore ce que les êtres humains connaissent des structures sonores de leurs langues, comment ils les apprennent et comment ces connaissances sont représentées. Nous commençons par une vue d'ensemble des principales caractéristiques des structures sonores et introduisons les concepts phonologiques de base (phonème, caractéristique, alternance). Nous examinerons ensuite les recherches qui ont cherché à déterminer quelles généralisations phonologiques les locuteurs tirent des données d'apprentissage, et les implications de ces résultats pour obtenir un cadre grammatical descriptivement adéquat : les règles phonologiques, la théorie des traits phonologiques et l’interaction des contraintes. Ensuite, nous examinerons une gamme de méthodes utilisées pour déterminer les connaissances phonologiques implicites des locuteurs, les modèles computationnels d'acquisition phonologique et le rôle de la perception auditive dans l'élaboration des grammaires phonologiques. Les élèves apprendront également les concepts de base de la phonétique articulatoire et acoustique, ainsi que les outils de base pour analyser le signal de la parole en unités de représentation abstraites.

On successful completion of this course, students should students

• produce a formal analysis of a phonological dataset

• understand and apply criteria to evaluate and compare competing theoretical explanations

• acquire other key skills as linguists, including being able to read and understand linguistic
  papers on diverse topics, and providing constructive comments to others

• reflect on how phonology can be thought in the context of a complete linguistic system,
  specifically, and the human mind and brain, more in general
