This course will cover the principal results concerning and provide the basic mathematical, conceptual and experimental tools in the study of decision making in individual and strategic situations. It will be centered around the fundamental framework and concepts of decision theory and game theory, as developed by economic theorists, focussing on their connections and role in philosophy, experimental and behavioural economics, and relevant branches of psychology.
The course is intended for students aiming to obtain a deep foundation in the formally-based, experimentally- and conceptually-informed decision sciences.
Part 1. Individual decision making (Decision Theory)
Introduction ; frameworks for modelling decision, uncertainty, time, interaction (class 1)
Decision making in the absence of uncertainty (classes 2 & 3)
Decision making under risk and uncertainty: classical approaches (classes 4 & 5)
New approaches to decision under uncertainty: “severe uncertainty” and ambiguity (class 6)
New descriptive approaches to decision making under risk and uncertainty: Prospect Theory (class 7)
Decision and time (class 8)
Part 2. Strategic decision making (Game Theory)
Strategies and equilibria in simultaneous-move games (class 9)
Strategies and equilibria in extensive form and repeated games (class 10)
Games and Bargaining on Networks (class 11 & 12)
Evolutionary Games and Learning (class 13)
