Cities have long been a key target of wartime destruction and among a central place of reconstructions to rise again after conflicts. They serve as battle-scared witnesses to various forms of destructions and reconstruction, revealing the political, socio-cultural, physical and memorial dimensions of the successive periods. This seminar aims to analyse the impacts of war and the often very long process of building peace in the cities, primarily, but not exclusively, in Central Europe.
The seminar will be conducted in English to facilitate exchanges between researchers and students/doctoral candidates from the EHESS and from their partner institutions: the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CMS) at the Technische Universität Berlin as well as members of the EURETES European Social Science Research Training Program, "War and Society: Central and Eastern Europe, 20th-21st Centuries" – the Center for Urban History in Lviv and the Department of Transnational History at Charles University in Prague – initiated by CERCEC (EHESS).
Organized in a hybrid format, this multidisciplinary seminar (history, urban planning, architecture, geography, sociology, visual studies) will host speakers from several universities and research centers. It will be led by Gábor Sonkoly (Géographie-cités) and by Irina Tcherneva (CERCEC) as well as by Dorothee Brantz (CMS, Berlin).
