This research seminar targets a broad audience: young scholars in the social sciences (not only Economics, but also Sociology, History, Political Science, Anthropology, Philosophy, etc., who usually finish their undergraduate and PhD degrees after very little contact with Classical Political Economy), as well as those from the natural sciences with an interest in the development of economic ideas and their philosophical roots. The meetings are not about a chronological description of doctrines, anchored in the past, as canonically presented in the textbooks on the history of economic thought. On the contrary, they seek to contribute to our understanding of contemporary capitalism, for which, we propose, it is necessary to study the historical development of the central economic concepts: commodity, money and capital. We argue that only the continuation of the living yet dormant Political Economy project offers the keys to understand the challenges of our historical present, where the main conflict is who plans whom.
Ce séminaire de recherche cible un public large : des jeunes chercheurs en sciences sociales (non seulement en économie, mais aussi en sociologie, histoire, sciences politiques, anthropologie, philosophie, etc.), ainsi que ceux en sciences naturelles qui s’intéressent à l’évolution des idées économiques et à leurs racines philosophiques. Le but n’est pas de faire une description chronologique des doctrines, ancrées dans le passé, telles qu’elles peuvent se présenter dans les manuels d’histoire de la pensée économique. Il s’agit, au contraire, de contribuer à notre compréhension du capitalisme contemporain. Pour ce faire, nous partons du principe qu’il est nécessaire d’étudier le développement des concepts économiques centraux : merchandise, monnaie et capital. Nous soutenons que seule la poursuite du projet original de l’économie politique – qu’il faut impérativement raviver aujourd’hui – offre les clés pour comprendre les défis du présent, dont le conflit principal porte sur le pouvoir de planification des uns sur les autres, basé sur une conception hétéronomique de l’histoire.
