This course covers literature in anthropology and the history of science on innovation, claims over knowledge, and intellectual and cultural property. Drawing on Enlightenment philosophy, European statecraft, and on ethnography from different regions of the world, we look at alternate conceptions of creativity, ownership, and collaboration. The underlying motivation is to expose some of the consequences of liberal individualism for the structure and politics of contemporary social realities. It will provide students with theoretical tools to approach contemporary issues of innovation, ownership, and the value placed upon knowledge in a variety of contexts.
We examine the ownership of knowledge in science, in the arts, and in digital environments. We discuss how concepts of the person, of nature, and of culture, figure in the formation of scientific knowledge, property, the state, and authorship. A focus on creativity reveals the different kinds of claims made possible by different kinds of knowledge making, the place of discovery, of subjectivity, and objectivity, of gender, and of different models ownership. We will examine the expansion and influence of intellectual and cultural property globally. We will cover collaboration in the digital world and examine Free Software as a case. We will touch on AI, personhood, the body, and ownership. The seminar concludes by looking at Melanesian processes and understandings of creativity and personhood in relation to ownership, and at the development of Copyright and Intangibale Cultural Heritage laws in Indonesia.
