Urban anthropology holds an uneasy position within the discipline of anthropology. Not only has anthropology long been preoccupied mainly with the “rural,” which served as a reference point for characterizing the “urban,” but more recently the case for a specific “urban” anthropology has been questioned by theories of “planetary urbanization”: has anthropology now become “urban” everywhere?
This seminar aims to revisit urban anthropology from a comparative and reflexive perspective, focusing on the ways in which “the urban” has been both locally constituted and analytically constructed within different anthropological traditions. Rather than viewing urban anthropology as a unified subfield, and urbanization as “planetary”, our goal is to reflect on how what is defined as “urban,” as well as the issues deemed relevant to the “urban,” vary according to institutional and intellectual contexts and histories.
This seminar therefore explores how urban anthropology is embedded in “local anthropologies,” shaped by situated histories of knowledge production, methodological traditions, and specific empirical commitments.
Drawing on a comparative “case-based” approach, the seminar aims to explore how different urban contexts—in China, the United States, Argentina, South Africa, or Mexico—have contributed to the emergence of distinct analytical frameworks and ethnographic sensibilities. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between material forms and social processes: how urban morphologies are historically produced, and how they are understood through conceptual tools forged within specific anthropological traditions.
The seminar will critically examine the role played by some major cities in the production of knowledge,which are often established as centers of theoretical reference. But it will be equally important to ask what other cities, less central in academic hierarchies, reveal and how they enable us to shift analytical frameworks. This focus on different scales—from local urban configurations to the global circulation of concepts—invites reflection on how cities produce knowledge, but also on how they reconfigure anthropology itself.
