How should we approach the current landscape of research on and within the Mediterranean? Processes related to climate change, migration flows, and political upheavals make this region a key focus for studying and understanding the contemporary world. Furthermore, it has always been—and remains—a vital forum for reflection on the past, present, and future of “area studies”. Today, as in the past, developing a critical perspective on Mediterranean dynamics requires fostering dialogue between historical sciences, environmental studies, and contemporary social sciences.

This seminar aims to develop, coordinate, and highlight initiatives carried out within the framework of the European Research Training in Social Sciences (EURETES) “Connections and Mobilities in the Mediterranean” program. Based on a shared scientific approach and structured around common thematic axes—“situated knowledge,” “language issues,” “space and environment”—it brings together three leading partners: the Center for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan, and Central Asian Studies (CETOBaC, Aubervilliers), the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS, Rethymno), and the Department of Sociology at Galatasaray University (GSÜ, Istanbul), with the aim of developing coordinated research and training activities among the three institutions.

Drawing on various approaches from anthropology, geography, history, political science, and sociology, and emphasizing the commonalities and differences among the regions studied by the participating teams (namely the Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Middle East, the Maghreb, and Central Asia), this seminar aims to contribute to the development of transregional research approaches and practices in the humanities and social sciences, both within the Mediterranean world and in relation to it.
