The initial seminars will explore several overarching themes related to the Eastern Roman Empire (commonly known as Byzantium) and its historiographical interpretations. These include defining the Empire in light of major contemporary historiographical trends; examining the interplay between its chronology and territorial scope; introducing its principal primary sources and archival materials; analysing the structure and socio-cultural role of its administrative apparatus; and investigating the relationship between imperial authority, religious belief, and institutionalised religion.
Over the course of the year, we will turn our attention to specific historical episodes and material objects, with a particular focus on books from various periods of the Empire’s millennium-long history. This will involve visits to selected Parisian libraries, monuments, and museums that house such artefacts. Special attention will be given to the manuscript books and documents of the Monastery of Leimonos, located on the island of Lesbos, which have recently been (re)discovered and studied as part of an international research project.
