Cet enseignement de tronc commun du master anthropologie introduit aux thématiques et questionnements majeurs de la discipline par le biais de débats et controverses théoriques et épistémologiques portant sur des concepts, notions, interprétations, approches. Nous nous pencherons sur des débats et controverses qui ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre au cours des dernières décennies.

Chaque séance est construite autour d’une controverse qui oppose des anthropologues à partir d’une question qui leur est posée – comme les débats organisés autour de motions contraires à l’université de Manchester – ou qui s’est déclenchée autour des propositions formulées dans un article ou ouvrage scientifique – par exemple, réactions dans la section « forum » de revues. Dans les deux cas, l’objectif de cet enseignement sera de comprendre les enjeux sous-jacents au débat, en étudiant de près l’argumentaire déployé de part et d’autre, et d’approfondir les références mobilisées à l’appui de ces arguments, qu’elles soient de nature empirique ou théorique.
