The production and consumption of visual materials are universal but also culture-specific. What is the potential and limit of the camera in research? This seminar will focus on the theoretical part of visual anthropology/sociology, the study of films concerning the diversity and specificity of the human condition and film as an entry into immerging themes. However, a few lectures are dedicated to the principles of visual anthropology and technical components in light, framing, composition, storyline process of production and other technical components. The seminar will give foundational knowledge on visual anthropology and a critical tool for those who would like to explore visual anthropology as a discipline or a tool for research in the social sciences and other disciplines. Each session is accompanied by a reading list, documentary film, or any creative output, depending on the theme. The course intends to familiarize students/ researchers with the production and interpretation of visual culture, mainly films and photographs: agency and power, ethics and reflexivity in visual anthropology
