The seminar will consist of two parts : the first will focus on some fundamental problems relating to the Byzantine Empire and its study (definition of the « Byzantine Empire » following the main historiographical trends; the link between the chronology and the extension of the Empire; sources and archives; the structure of the administrative system in the different periods; the relationship between imperial power, faith and institutional religion etc.); in the second part, we will begin to draft a book on 'The History of Byzantium through the History of its Books'. It will illustrate the key moments in the millennial history of the Empire through the analysis of some particularly significant books. We will illustrate the history of each book, with a focus on their significance not only for Byzantine history, but also for the reception of Byzantium in modern and contemporary times. In this framework, we will analyse, among others, the Codex Vaticanus ("B") of the Bible (Vat. gr. 1209), the "Dioscorides of Vienne" (Vindob. Med. Gr. 1), the "Littera Florentina" de la bibliothèque Laurenziana, the "Ps.-Denys l'Aréopagite de Paris" (Paris. gr. 437) and the "Psautier de Paris" (Paris. gr. 139).
