This seminar is addressed to Master students of EHESS and of the European University in Saint Petersburg. It will be delivered in English in a hybrid format: on the Condorcet Campus in Paris and online for students in Russia.

In twelve presentations, the aim is to provide a historical and historiographical analysis of how Europe can be defined in its diversity and what can be gained, from a scientific point of view, by grasping it in its entirety. The long term is essential: the lessons cover a period that extends from the central Middle Ages to the 20th century. The aim is not to give a century-by-century account of events, but rather to understand the main processes and successive historical configurations that help us understand present-day Europe

9 octobre 2023 : How did kings and princes make themselves obeyed?  

16 octobre 2023 : 1453, 1492, 1517: three events which shook the West. 

23 octobre 2023 : Ubiquity of barbarism in early modern Europe. 

30 octobre 2023 : The actuality of empire in European kingship. 

6 novembre 2023 : The forms of expansion.  

13 novembre 2023 : The European formation of racial categories. 

20 novembre 2023 : Evolution and revolutions of knowledge and societies.

27 novembre 2023 : Were the liberal revolutions revolutionary? 

4 décembre 2023 : A Europe of globalization and suicide.
